Going with the flow

I'm still getting used to the logistics of belonging to a big family. Thinking in terms of six people when me, Mike and the kids are all together. And thinking in terms of two dozen +/- when the whole clan of sibs, their kids and grandma Sue are together. It's always a little crazy. Like when we were trying to figure out which of the three hotel rooms Mike and I would be sleeping in and with which roommates last night.

So I'm trying to go with the flow--something that I'm not very good at. I'm a planner. That doesn't always work well, whether it's the large group of people or the things that come up unexpectedly--something seems to gum up the plans one way or another.

So I'm practicing this flow thing. The flow currently has Mike taking Brad to an urgent care clinic to get his raging sore throat looked at, me having to roust the girls out of bed and have them ready by checkout time, and hoping that Mike and Brad get back before noon with the car so we have a place to put our 13 bags and the waterski. Oh, and figure out what we're doing for breakfast, now that the hotel's complimentary breakfast is shut down and there's only one place within walking distance.

Yup, the fun starts as soon as I'm out of the shower.

Going with the flow can be a good skill to learn when one has been accustomed to methodical, planned living. (Nothing wrong with the latter, by the way.) I've had to learn to be more spontaneous and seat-of-the-pants than I ever was before I met Agnes. It was really hard at first, but we've learned to accommodate each other. She knows the moments when I need us to be precise and stick to a schedule and I'm learning to embrace the moments where we decide to totally deviate and either just up and do something random or have a goal but take our time about getting to it. Both have their time and place, but I'm also discovering that spontaneity can be quite relaxing, too!

Take this week and give it a try. If the rest of them aren't stressing out, neither should you. Just, you know, go with the flow... ;-)

My two cents...

Wow, I WISH I had your talents. I SO SUCK at planning. If it weren't for going with the flow, I wouldn't ever do anything. Seriously, I wish I was organised and could even remotely plan something. 'Tis a useful skill. It's not only that I'm not good at it, it's also that THE VERY IDEA OF PLANNING OR ORGANISING CAUSES ANXIETY NIGH UNTO PANIC. WTF is wrong with me?!?!

A little ADD medication has helped a lot, but lordy, we're talking starting from LESS than zero. I'm just lucky Janet is nice enough to not hate me when I fail to inform her about when we're arriving at her airport. Or fail to book the tickets in advance in the first place. Ugh. Vacations would be SO MUCH MORE AWESOME if you didn't have to plan ANYTHING.

In conclusion, I don't like plans.

Well, when you're traveling with NINETEEN people, even the best plans can go belly up. :)

We ended up leaving Lake Powell early so we could spend time with Mike's brother & kids and Grandma Sue in Idaho Falls. And the nine hour drive from Powell to Idaho Falls took 13 hours, between potty stops for unsynchronized bladders, Grandma Sue needing to stretch her legs, stopping for food, stopping for gas and stopping to trade drivers, passengers, luggage, etc.

Will write more later. About to eat dinner and need to look up how to remove the smell of fish from the rented minivan stow-n-go compartments. (I caught 4 striper!)

Oh where, oh where has our ME gone?
Oh where, oh where can she be?
With her witty words,
And her hair not blond,
Oh where is our dear, dear Emmm Eeeee?

Come out, come out, wherever you are....

Sorry! We got back late Sunday night and I just now fired up the laptop. I have a column to write tonight about the new gelateria opening up in town. As soon as that's done, I'll be posting updates galore, promise!
