I've been a leetle disappointed with some of the Craigslist people. I've had no problem recycling empty moving boxes on CL before.
So far, of the 9 people who contacted me about the boxes before I took down the ad Saturday afternoon, the very first people to respond were the only ones to show up when they said they were coming. And they didn't take many.
The second caller told me Tuesday he'd pick up boxes Thursday morning, so I put off three other callers. When he didn't show, I called the next two people on my list. One said she'd come Friday night or Saturday, but never showed, either.
I called the next woman on the list and said they had a day to pick up boxes. I got a call back from her husband Saturday morning, who said they desperately needed the boxes--don't give them away! But we were at the house until 6:30 pm and he didn't show up.
When we got home from our Saturday evening jaunt to SLC, there was a minivan in our driveway and two women flattening boxes. I have no idea which callers they were and at this point, I didn't much care. They took most of the boxes we had on the front porch.
I'll empty a few more boxes today, call the next person and give them my new spiel: there are 4 other people on my list. You have one day to pick up any boxes you want. If you don't show up, I call the next person. You snooze, you lose.

A lot of people on Craigslist just say, "No holds; first come, first served." Now I see why.
What is the name of the murder mystery you finished? Any good?
Yeah, the person I called today was all excited and needed more boxes and was going to come tonight and...nada.
The book: The Analyst by John Katzenbach. Were you the person who recommended it? Somehow, I have it connected with our paths crossing in London. It's been a while since I read it, so I stayed up (too) late in order to finish it.
I had no problem giving away my boxes here, but then people move a lot around here. Especially this time of year, when the military and State Department activate all of their promotions and reassignments.
Nothing like a good mystery! I just finished reading Kate Atkinson's Case Histories. Very different than your typical murder mystery and very good.
I LOVED Case Histories! I read it on the houseboat last summer. I also read one of her other books on JaneAnne's recommendation. Nothing like a good mystery to keep you up late on summer nights. :)
Yeah, I don't get it with the boxes. I've given out our address to six people so far and had only two takers.
Oh yeah! I have another of her books I just finished reading. Hold on... It's in the other room and I can't think of the title... Be right back...
Phew! Okay, it's called One Good Turn. I liked Case Histories best, but OGT decent. I want to read Atkinson's Behind the Scenes at the Museum. Have you read that one?
Also, another really good read is Erik Larson's Thunderstruck about the development of wireless telegraphy and how it helped solve a murder mystery. Sort of a history meets real life and solves the crime!
Yes--Behind the Scenes at the Museum was one JA recommended and I think we read it in our Book Group. If you liked Case Histories, you should like this one.
I'll have to check out the other one you mentioned. I might need to get a Utah DL before I can get a library card; I'm strangely attached to my Texas one.
The Analyst?! Yes, I did read that in London. I can't believe you remembered it for so long. I actually gave that book away to a disgruntled passenger on my flight back home; Virgin's IFE system wasn't working (and this was LHR-LAX, a 10-hour flight) and there was a near riot.
You won't necessarily need a new license to get your library card, just a photo ID & something with your current address:

Mmm, new book recommendations -- yummy!!
I have only the vaguest idea of what Craigslist is. Does that make me super dumb, or just out of touch?
I can see the advantage of the "no holds, first come/first served" thing, though. We get a lot of move-ins and move-outs here, and though boxes are never on offer (not sure why, now that I think about it...maybe cos the moving companies take them away with them?), there are always cheap household items for sale b/c people are moving back overseas. We have gotten some really great stuff for totally cheap prices. But if someone hadn't been willing to hold their DVD player for me to come pick up when I could get there, we'd be DVD-less today. LOL, okay, we wouldn't -- but we would have paid more.
I'm so rambling.
You're in luck, Di. There's a CL for Basel. You can check it out here:

I've used CL to find moving boxes, free stuff, rideshares, garage/moving sales and I used to read the wedding forum to get ideas (lots of bitchy future brides there).
I also like the Best Of section. Lots of scatological, employee revenge stories, funny personal ads and people trying to get rid of weird stuff. Lots of fun to read. Can become a major time suck.
Love love love Behind the Scenes at the Museum (duh). When I get home from vacay I can dig up the family tree I mapped out when we read it for my book group.
Haven't used Craigslist much, but I've had good luck with freecycle. How fabulous to have things you don't want just disappear off your front porch!
Got up this morning to find all but one box gone and a note saying thanks. Yay! Clean porch!
