I was perusing the McAllen Chamber of Commerce website and found this link:

Sadly, it's too late to enter the contest to win a trip to McAllen, but the page had some interesting information. I didn't know McAllen was considered the Square Dance Capital of the World. Did you?
I also checked out www.RGVImpress.com. I ran into the site's webmaster on the doorstep of the one Thai restaurant in town and he handed me his card.
I was hoping for actual restaurant reviews, but it looks to be more of a listing service for restaurants without much editorial comment on the food. For the latter, I'll have to keep reading http://www.dallasfood.org/ and Chowhound.
