The girls were here for a week, so they came along on all the birthday fun, which included:
- First shift at the ward service project, painting Peggy's house inside and out
- Surprising me with batches of cupcakes and milk and rounding up all the toilers to sing Happy Birthday
- A quick lunch at Subway while we were sweaty and paint-covered
- Cleaning up so we could go to dinner at the good Chinese buffet
- Catching a performance of The Fantasticks--my all time favorite play--at the university
- Heading home for cake, ice cream and presents
We also had a celebration at the office Friday. My supervisor and I have the same birthday, and three other women in the office have birthdays within a few days of each other. So we went to lunch (Mexican buffet) and had strawberry tres leches cake (totally snagged the recipe).
I wasn't sure what to expect my first birthday away from home and family, but it pretty well rocked. Friends sent cards and lovely gifts.
Mom sent me a sumptuously decorated jewelry box and the original setting to my grandmother's wedding ring, thinking I could have it refashioned into a wedding band. I'm a sentimental boob, so I'm thinking of getting it set with another stone so I can wear it and think of Grammy.
Coming soon: highlights from the step kids' visit

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! It sounds like you had a right swell time. I am loving that your mom sent you that ring - I would love that. I'm such a sucker for heirlooms that have stories and come from The Olden Days. Awesome.
Yeah, I'm with you on the heirloom thingie. Problem is, there are so many of us that there aren't that many to pass around. I do have David's great-grandmother's squash blossom necklace (the nicest one I've ever seen, actually), and I just got my grandmother's sterling flatware (she's not dead yet, just in assisted living).
I think having the ring so you can wear it all the time is a great idea.
I have a few things from Grammy, my mom's mom, like her class ring from 1918 and pictures of her with hair to her knees before she had it bobbed. (My mom has the braid somewhere and I used to love looking at it as a kid). But I really like the idea of having something wearble of hers.
I have two rings from my dad's mom, including a wedding ring from one of her 3 marriages (not sure which).
My brother will probably get Grammy's diamond, which my mom had reset with her wedding band diamonds. But there are some other cool pieces of jewelry I hope will live with me someday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Sounds like you have a lovely birthday with lots of good activities and good food! And what a cool, cool gift from your mom. In today's world of gaudy ice, heirlooms are elegant and classy. Like you! ;-)
Thanks! Aren't birthdays grand? And vintage birthday gifts--priceless.
HBTYME!
Happy Birthday. I hear 39's a good one. I'll find out in a couple months.
