We started off the week with a thunder/lightening/rain storm Monday. The storm parked over central McAllen and dumped 4-5 inches of rain just in time for the morning commute.
We took the Pathfinder instead of the lower-slung Honda and Toyota minivan and drove it through two massively flooded intersections before cutting over to another northbound road. Two SUVs had skidded off the road into a church marquee, but otherwise the route was clear and without flooding. A mile or so west of us, a tornado kicked ass on some buildings, ripping off roofs and facades for a couple of blocks.
Tuesday is kind of a blank. More rain. I sent out my second run of reports Wednesday, which will be due the week after I get back from vacation and will give me one week to make sure all the corrections have been made. Awkward timing, but it couldn't be helped.Wednesday evening brought another torrent just after we pulled into the driveway after work.
All this rain is even cooling things down. Into the 80s, that is. I'm not accustomed to summer rainstorms and keep getting caught at work sans umbrella and with weather inappropriate footwear.
Thursday night, the book group came over and we picked some upcoming selections more demanding than this month's Harriet the Spy. (I love Harriet, but I could really go for something more challenging). As with previous months, I coordinated the refreshments with the book, which left me with the options of cake and milk or tomato sandwiches. I opted for bruschetta and a sun dried tomato and feta spread instead.
Today was an improvement over last Friday. Mike got caught up in a long conference call, so I walked laps around his building and talked to his mom. She filled me in on some Lake Powell details that were helpful.
We came home for a quick bite then went to Barnes & Noble. On the night before/of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows release. Whoops. It was a madhouse--in-store promotions, photo ops with characters, crafts, adults, kids dressed in character garb and a teenage boy with shoulder length red hair who looked like he could easily be a Weasley.
I saw one girl with an irreverent Harry hearts Ron T shirt on. Underneath it read "Roommates for 7 years. It was bound to happen." That's one alternative ending I haven't heard bandied around before.
My copy of HP should arrive via UPS tomorrow--the perfect present for our paper anniversary on Sunday! Yup, a whole year of married life under our belts. Doesn't seem like that long.

Happy Anniversary! I must tell you it is not nearly as warm here this year as it was this same time last year. The paper gift Peter gave me for our first anniversary was a card congratulating me on the fact that we had just found out two days earlier, already 4 1/2 months pregnant, that we were having twins.
For the summer months our book club takes two months to read a young adult book, then we meet at the end of August just before school starts with our reading age kids to discuss the book. This summer we are reading/discussing a favorite book from my young adult years (my choice) Summer of the Monkeys by Wilson Rawls. Just a suggestion for your club, if you have any such candidates, if you read a young adult book again. Its a good way to (re)discover some books you loved or missed the first time around, and get younger kids excited about the book clubs of the future. :-)
I like hearing about the books you are reading.
Thanks!
I like how your book group plans to read YA books and has the kids there to discuss them.
Our reading a YA book was more accidental--someone suggesting Newberry award winners but not with any specific title in mind. So I got on the computer to look up titles and ran across Harriet, one of my old favorites. No one else had read it (and my other suggestions weren't hits), so Harriet it was.
Agnes is comfortably on the couch reading her copy, which arrived about 1/2 an hour ago. I suppose it'll be a few days before I see her
Happy Anniversary, ME and Mike!
Happy Anniversary, kids!
My Harry Potter came with the regular mail delivery this afternoon, which was fine because I was out most of the day with prenatal yoga and errands, AND I'm not going to start it until I read the last few pages of Robber Bride, my book group book.
Happy Reading!
Oh, and I love the Harry-Ron tee. I drove by Powell's this afternoon on my way home, and there was lots of HP-related chalk graffiti, including "Harry dies a virgin."
At least Harry/Ron is more palatable than the other popular slash pairing, Harry/Draco.
Congrats!
Thanks! I'm going through the wedding proofs to get some prints made (finally) and it's bringing back lots of happy memories!
We went out to dinner last night because all the chi-chi restaurants in town are closed on Sundays. Had seafood paella for two that was good (but not $75 good, IMO).
My copy of HP was misdelivered Saturday morning. Thankfully, the folks at 105 East called to let me know. I stayed up until 2-ish reading, then snuck out to the car to read during Sunday School today and finished about an hour before Mike came back from class. Twas a satisfying ending, I thought. By the end, I felt pretty wrung out.
