Love Shack

Mike just called to say "Guess who just bought a house?"

Why, that would be us. The owners accepted the offer--no haggling--and only wanted to change the closing date. As of June 9, 2006--barring any unforeseen problems with financing or the house inspection--we will own the house on Upas!

A note on the staggering difference between CA and TX real estate: we're getting a 3 bedroom, 2 bath 1900 square foot house for under $103,000. I saw a listing in the JPL ads for a 3 bed, 2 bath, 1900 sq.ft. house in Altadena. Asking price: $825,000. Gasp, choke.

And dammit, I left my cell phone at home today and can't call (easily) from the office to share the news with mom and dad.

Here's the MLS listing with interior and exterior pictures:

A home! That must make your future seem all the more concrete now. Contrats! So exciting.

$100K will get you a parking space in my neighborhood. $800 will get you a 2 bedroom/1 bath.

Yeah. I'm feeling kind of dizzy with all that's happening.

Mom called me at work when both my office mates were out, so I was able to tell her about the house.

I'm looking forward to going home tonight so I can actually TALK about this news with someone.

Yeah!!! Congratulations, ME. Can't wait to visit you and Mike on Upas and have a bbq in the back yard. Looks like there's lots of room for you and Mike, as well as kids!

Going with Adriana's vein: $100K will get you a shack on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains and $800K will barely get you into the house where I use to live down on 14th Street. I could kick myself for not buying down there four years ago when houses were still under $400K. Oh well.

Congrats again!

So, it's not *quite* as bad in Portland. The house 2 doors down from us, 2300 sf 3 bed 2 bath--similar in size to the Upas house, but with a slightly bigger living room, no garage or other offstreet parking, smaller yard, small hike up to the front door, is currently listed for $569.

But it looks great! Love the fruit trees. We'll have to come visit some time, you know, when it's not HOT.

The price of your house is just about 3/4 of we paid for our DOWN PAYMENT for our 4BD 2 1/2 Bath 2000 square footer here in the OC of So Cal. The price has nearly doubled in the past 4 years since we moved in, so of course, we could never afford to buy our own house now at just under $800K. But, for better or for worse, I don't think we are planning on moving anytime soon...

Looking forward to any/all comers for backyard BBQs and fresh squeezed lemonade. When is it not hot is South Texas...maybe at Christmas?

I'm excited. Already planning the kitchen remodel (to open it to the family room) and mentally re-landscaping the front yard.

Mike mentioned something about having the management department's opening social at our house in August--mere weeks after I'll move in. Will get back to him on that.

Congrats. Something like this house would be over $350 in our area. We just bought a 3 bed 1900 foot rowhouse for almost double what you are paying for your rancher. Enjoy!

Make sure to plant some native bushes in that backyard and put up a hummingbird feeder...lots of good birds down in the valley to enjoy.

Hope to visit you on one of my birding trips down there somethime!
