I got a call last night from the assistant managing editor at the local newspaper. I met with him last month, gave him my resume and writing portfolio, and asked if there were any openings on the copy desk.
I'd also pitched him an idea for a column. Since I'm new in town, I could ask locals, Winter Texans, and other transplants to the Valley to share their best-kept secrets with me, Rio Grande Valley Girl, and I could write about the expeditions that readers send me on.
Henry was calling to follow up after a staff meeting regarding Internet initiatives. They want to run with the column and would like to meet to discuss the details such as frequency, content, and what they'd pay. Yeeee haaaaw!
I need to call Henry back and brainstorm a few ideas to bring to the meeting, such as ideas for where Rio Grande Valley should go exploring first. Something that will draw readers in and keep them coming back.
I'll still blog here, natch, but this looks like a fun way for the Rio Grande Valley Girl persona to get some exposure beyond my circle of friends and family. And get paid for it--how cool is that?!

Wooooooooo Hooooooooo!
Congratulations, ME!
Yay!! And it will get you out and about an involved in your new community, too. Plus no 9-5 drag. All around awesome.
YES! That is awesome news! Congratulations, Valley Girl, I am so happy for you!
We're meeting Monday to hash out the details!
Will need to bring in some writing samples to give them an idea of my blog writing style.
I may write up a "You're new to the Valley if..." type post to start off with and brainstorm for some places to go. Maybe ask some longtime/lifelong residents what they think qualifies as a quintessential Rio Grande Valley experience.
so how would we, your gentle readers from so far away be able to read your column? Would you "rebroadcast" it on your blog? Would we have to subscribe online to the local McAllen newspaper? Is that even possible? If so, will one of you above commenters do so and forward it to me?
Here's the URL for the newspaper's website: www.TheMonitor.com
You should be able to read the blogs without having to subscribe or pay anything as far as I know.
It wil be kinda fun to have readers in both places. :)
